News trading rules at prop firms

News releases like CPI, NFP and FOMC move markets in seconds, and prop firms handle them very differently. Some let you trade straight through. Others close your positions for you or remove profits made around the release. Most only restrict news once you are funded, not in the evaluation.

The three things to check

  • Which stage. FTMO, Alpha Futures, MyFundedFutures, Funded Futures Network, E8 One, Blue Guardian and FundedNext only restrict news on funded accounts.
  • The window. 5 minutes before and after is the most common (Alpha Capital Group, Aqua Funded, Blue Guardian, BrightFunded, E8 One, FundedNext, FundingPips Master, Funding Traders, Goat, Hola Prime). 2 minutes is next (Alpha Futures, Blueberry Funded, FTMO, FunderPro, Maven, MyFundedFutures, TradeDay, The5ers High Stakes). Take Profit Trader and Funded Futures Network use 1 minute; FundingPips Zero uses 10.
  • The penalty. It ranges from losing some profit to losing the account.

Not every "FOMC" is the same

Event lists differ. MyFundedFutures restricts FOMC minutes as well as the rate decision. Take Profit Trader explicitly allows FOMC minutes and Fed speakers. Firms also point to different calendars: Alpha Futures names ForexFactory, Goat names ForexFactory or Myfxbook, and FTMO, E8, FundingPips, MyFundedFutures and TradeDay publish their own. Use the calendar your firm names, not a general one.

If you trade news

  • Shortlist firms that allow it on funded accounts: Bulenox, Earn2Trade, Lucid (not LucidDaily), Phidias, Top One Futures and Tradeify on futures, plus Apex and Topstep with the limits in the table; on forex, Hola Prime's Prime accounts.
  • If your firm has a window, set an alarm a few minutes before the window starts, so you are flat in time. Some firms count pending orders and stop-losses as activity.
  • Remember that slippage around news can hit your drawdown even where news is allowed. See trailing drawdown explained.

Questions traders ask

Which prop firms allow news trading?

Among the firms we checked, Apex, Bulenox, Earn2Trade, Lucid (except LucidDaily), Phidias, Top One Futures and Tradeify allow it on funded accounts without a time window. Many others allow it in the evaluation but restrict it once you are funded.

What is the usual news blackout window?

Among the 29 firms we checked, 5 minutes before and after the release is the most common window, followed by 2 minutes. A few firms use 1 or 10 minutes.

What happens if I trade news when it's not allowed?

It depends on the firm: removed profits (Blue Guardian, Goat), profits counted at 40% (FundedNext), a warning and then a breach (Alpha Futures), automatic liquidation (TradeDay), or immediate liquidation with forfeited profits (Funded Futures Network).
